BT Mobile is currently offering customers 100GB of data with access to the BT Sport App for £30 per month! BT Sport Access is already worth £10 a month & gives you access to the Premier League & Champions League matches. Also, every additional SIM you purchase comes at a 20% discount!
BT Mobile is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) powered by EE. The carrier is a great choice, if you’re looking for superfast 4G data speeds and the best 4G coverage in the UK.
The network also offers 5G coverage and download speeds, but according to their official website you need to purchase your 5G ready handset directly from one of their stores. BT Mobile customers on several forums say their 5G still works even though they purchased their devices from other retailers though.
BT Mobile offers both SIM only plans and phone plans, however, the network doesn’t have a pay as you go service.
In this article, our main focus will be BT Mobile’s family mobile plans, but we’ll also shortly cover BT’s network coverage & data speeds, as well as their available price plans.
BT’s family mobile SIMs are multiple SIMs being paid for from one main account. You can get up to 5 SIMs in total and each extra SIM has a 20% discount. While the name suggests these plans are specifically designed for families, any group of people can benefit from the family discounts.
All bills are paid by the main account holder. This person can also manage the settings and usage of all the other plans via BT’s mobile app. The network also allows you to add or remove SIMs, no questions asked.
All BT family mobile plans are 4G and 5G enabled. You also get unlimited UK minutes & texts, free EU roaming and free access to 5 million BT Wi-Fi hotspots across the country. If you pick a family plan with 30GB or more data, your plan will also include access to the BT Sport app.
While the provider gives full flexibility on additional SIM plans, the main account has to sign up for at least 12 months. You may cancel your contract within the first 30 days and get your money back, but beyond that point you’d have to pay a penalty fee if you want to opt out of your deal and switch to a new mobile network.
Since BT’s family mobile plans require the maint account holder to sign up for a long term contract, they will have to undergo a credit check. As stated earlier, additional SIMs can be added or removed if your needs change, meaning there are no credit checks to pass for them. It’s just the main account.
You will also benefit from 4G Calling & Wi-Fi Calling, provided your phone supports these two features. They improve your voice call quality immensely and your phone stays connected in more locations than ever.
The major downside is all plans must be the same as the main account holder’s plan, you can’t mix and match. While everything else is great about BT’s family SIM deals, this alone can be a deal breaker. After all, everyone’s data usage differs and you can’t move around data from one SIM to another and BT Mobile doesn’t offer a data rollover scheme either.
On top of the 20% discount you get with each extra SIM, you also get to benefit from additional discounts and extras that come with being an existing BT Broadband and BT Halo customer.
If any person in your household has BT Broadband you get £5 off a month, including off the main SIM.
If you also have BT Halo, you get to keep the £5 discount and get double data on all available plans. You also become eligible for BT Mobile’s unlimited data plan.
Each additional BT Mobile SIM is 20% cheaper than a SIM by itself, so you’ll be saving a great deal of money to begin with. If you’re also a BT Broadband customer you’ll get an additional £5 discount per plan, including the main SIM. BT Mobile’s prices are usually a bit expensive, but with these two discounts the network offers competitive prices with great features and top tier 4G coverage.
BT Mobile remains fairly flexible when it comes to their plans. The main account has to sign up for a contract that’s at least 12 months long, and additional SIMs must have the price plan as the main account holder. However, the main account holder can switch between all the available plans once per month.
You can also add or remove additional SIMs and there’s no need to notify BT Mobile. You can add up to four more SIMs to your main account.
The main account holder can manage the settings, usage and payments for all the SIMs via BT Mobile’s official website or the network’s mobile app. We think this is a must have for a family SIM deal, but if you’re a group of friends giving this much power to one user may be problematic.
If you’re a business looking for a group plan, we recommend checking out our extensive best business SIM plans in the UK guide.
All BT customers are eligible for the provider’s free Wi-Fi hotspot service. Both the main account and additional family SIMs get unlimited access to over 5 million BT hotspots at no extra cost. You can find BT Mobile’s free Wi-Fi hotspots around shopping centres, train stations, coffee shops, restaurants & more.
BT Wi-Fi is available to non-BT users as well, but they would have to pay for the service. Once you connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot, you’ll be automatically connected to all the others when you’re in the area. This can help save data, especially if you’re on a light data plan.
Normally, BT Mobile plans with at least 20GB of data would get you free access to the BT Sport mobile app. However, the 24GB data plan (normally 12GB, only available to BT Halo customers) doesn’t include this feature.
This feature allows you to watch live games and sporting events. You can even catch Premier League and Champions League games. Although, we’d like to underline that, using the app will burn through your monthly data allowance. Make sure to connect to Wi-Fi or check if you have enough data as watching high quality streams can eat up your data at a very fast rate.
BT Mobile offers identical 4G coverage with EE, meaning the experience is exactly the same. All mobile networks in the UK offer over 99% population coverage, but only EE has over 95% geographical coverage.
EE delivers the quickest 4G download speeds according to Open Signal’s October 2020 mobile network tests. The network’s average 4G download speeds are around 36mbps and their upload speeds are around 9 to 10Mbps. However, BT Mobile’s 4G download speeds are capped at 60Mbps, but you can buy the extra speed add-on to bypass that cap.
The same applies for BT’s 5G service. You get identical 5G coverage with EE customers, plus, this time there’s no speed caps. However, BT says in order to benefit from their 5G network, you must purchase your 5G ready handset directly from their stores. All BT Mobile plans are 5G enabled and come at no extra cost.
EE’s 5G download speeds are currently the slowest in the UK per OOKLA’s October 2020 speed test results, but the network offers 5G in 112 cities and towns across the country. On top of that their 5G coverage per location is wider than any other operator.
We still recommend checking out Three’s 5G SIM only plans, if you want the fastest 5G data speeds. They have the best 5G infrastructure and their service is live in 154 locations at the time of writing. Read our Three Review to discover more about their coverage and deals.
All BT family mobile plans come with 4G Calling & Wi-Fi Calling, but in order to benefit from these features, your device must support them.
4G Calling (also known as VoLTE) lets you make calls over BT Mobile’s 4G network and it eliminates indoor blackspots. Calls made over 4G are clearer and significantly better if both parties are using the feature.
Wi-Fi Calling keeps your handset connected, even if it isn’t getting any cellular signal. It uses an available Wi-Fi connection that has internet access to keep your device available for voice calls.
BT Mobile special roaming add on is dubbed as Travel Data Pass and it gives you 500MB of data per day for £6/ day in eligible countries. The add-on works in the following countries: USA, Canada, China, Mexico, New Zealand, Turkey, UAE, Thailand, Andorra, Australia, India and South Africa. The add-on only gets you data though, if you want to make or receive calls and send texts, make sure to check out BT Mobile’s rates first.
We think BT Mobile offers one of the best family mobile plans in the UK, especially if you already have BT Broadband at home. Needless to say, if you’re also a BT Halo customer then the value increases even more! We also like how the additional SIMs are commitment-free and having free Wi-Fi across the country is also a great data saver. You get great 4G coverage and even 5G data speeds whenever you’re in an area with EE’s 5G network.
However, the only real major problem is how everyone has to have the same SIM plan. We all have different demands when it comes to our phones and our data usage can be very different. This could still work in a family, but it’s hard to say the same for a group of friends.
You can read our extensive BT Mobile Review to learn more about the network’s other features, network coverage and price plans.
