What is BT Mobile?

While BT actually owns the EE Network, BT Mobile continues to run as a separate carrier powered by EE. BT Mobile is a great choice for customers who are already BT customers, but some of their unique features can attract other mobile users, too.

The carrier gets the basics right by providing 99% population coverage and the fastest 4G data speeds in the market, thanks to EE’s underlying infrastructure. All BT Mobile SIM only deals include unlimited UK minutes and texts, as well as 5G at no extra cost and access to BT WiFi. Their deals also provide 4G Calling and WiFi Calling at no additional cost.

BT Mobile is a great choice to start a family mobile plan, plus if you’re a BT Broadband customer you get £5 off a month. On top of that, BT Halo customers get double data!

Network Coverage & Speeds

BT Mobile 4G Coverage

EE and BT use the same network, offering identical network coverage and data speeds. This means BT Mobile customers can get the fastest 4G data speeds and the best 4G coverage. EE is the UK’s no.1 network for performance, per objective testing bodies such as Opensignal, OOKLA, umlaut and RootMetrics.

EE and BT customers can enjoy 99% population coverage in the UK. Population coverage doesn’t mean much, as all four major networks provide over 99% coverage nowadays, but landmass coverage is really important, and this is where EE and BT shine. They provide over 95% geographical coverage, more than any other UK network.

BT Mobile 4G Speeds

As stated earlier, BT Mobile is powered by the EE Network. There are no hidden speed caps, so you get what EE customers get as a BT Mobile customer.

EE’s average 4G download speeds are around 44Mbps, and their upload speeds are around 9.7Mbps, per Opensignal’s latest test results. Second-placed Three offers about 25Mbps download speeds on average, meaning EE and BT are almost twice as fast compared to Three in this area. If EE’s coverage is decent in your area you can easily stream 4K quality movies and series without experiencing any issues. You can do heavy-data activities at the same time as light data activities such as checking your emails, surfing on the web, or listening to music.

We normally don’t recommend 4G for mobile gaming, however, EE’s 4G network is strong enough to support competitive gamers. Just make sure your frequent areas are well covered.

BT Mobile 5G Coverage

BT Mobile offers 5G at no extra cost, which is also powered by EE. The network’s 5G service is live in 160 cities and towns, and the number is increasing at a steady pace. One thing to note, while EE 5G isn’t available in as many locations as some of the other networks, their 5G coverage per location is significantly wider and more reliable.

BT Mobile 5G Speeds

According to Opensignal’s September 2021 speed tests on a 5G connection, EE has the fastest 5G download speeds in the UK at 132Mbps. Their 5G upload speeds are also the fastest in the UK, averaging around 14Mbps.

To enjoy superfast 5G download speeds from EE, you must be in an area with EE 5G and also have a device that is 5G ready. BT Mobile’s SIM only deals are 5G ready.

WiFi Calling and 4G Calling

WiFi Calling and 4G Calling used to be premium features offered by the major networks, and even then not all plans would include them. Nowadays, pretty much all the UK mobile networks offer these call quality improving services at no cost.

WiFi Calling allows you to make and receive calls, also send and receive texts over an available WiFi connection. This way, you can stay connected, even when there’s no cellular signal in your area.

4G Calling (also known as VoLTE) improves your voice calls and the difference is very noticeable. Calls made over 4G are clearer, in higher quality, and more reliable. This feature eliminates most indoor blackspots and also connects your calls quicker. Keep in mind though, both you and the phone you’re calling need to have 4G Calling.

BT Mobile customers can enjoy WiFi Calling and 4G Calling. Just make sure your phone supports them. Also, you may have to update your device first, and in some cases, you may have to manually turn these features on.

Personal Hotspot

BT Mobile allows its users to tether to other compatible devices, but there are a few limitations. You can use your mobile phone as a personal hotspot, but you’re limited to 12 devices at most. The network will monitor your data usage, and if they detect a misuse they may terminate your contract.

Tethering burns through your data at a much faster rate, and it’s also the main villain in some horror stories where the bill is shockingly high. We always recommend opting for an unlimited data plan, if you’re going to tether regularly. You may want to check how much data you’ve used after each session to be safe.

Features

BT WiFi

All BT Mobile customers benefit from BT Wi-Fi and get unlimited access to over 5 million BT WiFi hotspots at no extra cost. These hotspots are mainly based around shopping centres, train stations, coffee shops, restaurants, and more.

BT Sport

When you choose a BT Mobile plan with at least 40GB of data, you get free access to the BT Sport mobile application. With BT Sport’s mobile app you can watch live games and sporting events including Premier League and FA Cup matches. However, using the app will eat up your monthly data allowance so it’s better to use it with WiFi if you don’t have a lot of spare data.

BT Broadband and BT Halo Discounts

If you’re an existing BT Broadband customer you get an automatic £5/month discount on all BT Mobile price plans. The bill doesn’t have to be under your name, but you’ll have to provide proof that you’re living in a household with a BT Broadband connection. If you also have BT Halo, you’ll be getting double data on all BT Mobile plans.

If you’re a BT Halo customer you get double data on all BT Mobile plans. This bonus works even if the plan you choose already comes with a data boost.

We strongly recommend checking out our BT Complete WiFi Review. This service guarantees WiFi in every room of your house or offers your money back.

BT Mobile Family Plans

We think BT Mobile offers the best family discounts in the UK. BT Mobile’s family deals are straightforward and they offer great value. And if you’re an existing BT Broadband member it gets even better. BT Halo customers are granted double the data on all plans.

One downside to BT’s family plans is all family members must be on the same price plan. You can save up to 20%, but the more plans you add (maximum five SIMs per family plan) and the pricier ones you pick, the more you’ll be saving with BT Mobile.

If BT Mobile’s family deals aren’t what you’re looking for you might want to read our guide on the best family mobile plans in the UK and find the one that suits your needs the best.

Change Your Plan Monthly

While BT Mobile doesn’t have any 30-day rolling plans, the network proposes flexibility by letting you change your tariff on a monthly basis. It’s that simple, you can change your data every month, no questions asked. It’s also worth noting that BT Mobile doesn’t offer data rollover.

International Roaming

In most cases, a BT Mobile SIM is already set up for roaming abroad. You can use your plan allowance abroad in 47 destinations without paying extra roaming charges. You’ll also get free access to BT’s free Wi-Fi hotspots around the world.

Non-European countries such as Australia, Japan, and the US aren’t included in BT Mobile’s ‘Roam Like Home’. If you’re travelling to a country outside the EU zone, make sure to check BT Mobile’s roaming charges.

BT Mobile also offers a special add-on called ‘Travel Data Pass’, which gets you a 500MB data allowance for £6 a day in eligible countries. You can use this addon in the USA, Canada, China, Mexico, New Zealand, UAE, Thailand, Andorra, Australia, India, and South Africa.

Roaming charges apply when you use data, calls, and texts in destinations outside these zones. To learn more you can read our roaming outside the UK guide. We don’t recommend BT Mobile for making international calls from the UK, as their rates are a high.

Half Cooked’s Overall Breakdown

BT Mobile is a great choice if you already own a handset that you’re happy with. While they also offer smartphones, their collection is limited.

The carrier offers top-notch 4G coverage and data speeds, as well as reliable 5G speeds if you’re in an area with their 5G service. We strongly recommend checking their deals, especially if you’re already a BT customer.

BT Mobile has developed a well-rounded proposition whilst providing quality and additional perks at a somewhat reasonable price point than some of the other networks. We give BT Mobile 4 and a half stars out of 5.
