Who is BT Mobile?

BT Mobile is a great all round network. Running on the EE network, BT Mobile gets the basics right by providing 99% population coverage and the fastest 4G data speeds in the market.

BT actually owns the EE Network, but continues to run as a separate carrier. BT Mobile also offers over 5 million free BT WiFi hotspots.

  • Fastest 4G data speeds and best 4G coverage. Also provides 5G.
  • Over 5 million free WiFi hotspots.
  • Great family deals!
  • WiFi Calling & 4G Calling

  • No monthly rolling plans or PAYG.
  • Not great for roaming abroad.

Plans & Pricing

When it comes to SIM Only deals, BT Mobile only offers 12 month and 24 months contracts, with no 30 day rolling contract options available. To get BT Mobile’s cheapest prices, you have to be a broadband customer. At the time of writing, if you have BT Broadband you automatically get £5 off a month. On top of that, if you also have BT Halo then you get double data on all deals.

The carrier has two unlimited data deals, but both of them are exclusive to BT Halo customers. Regular customers -including broadband customers- can get 100GB data per month at best. You can also change your data monthly on all BT SIM only deals. If you need an unlimited data deal, but don’t have BT Halo you can check out our detailed review to find the best unlimited data plans available in the UK. Alternatively, you can read our BT Mobile vs EE article and compare each network’s price plans.

Eligible BT Broadband customers get BT Rewardcard and £5 off a month, BT Halo customers get double data on all deals. All BT Mobile SIM plans are long term contracts, meaning you’ll have to pass a credit check to join BT Mobile.

Pay As You Go

There are no 30-day options on offer or PAYG deals on BT Mobile. If you’re looking for a PAYG deal that also uses the same coverage as BT, EE offers PAYG packs and ‘Flex Plans’. Alternatively, you can check out giffgaff’s flexible goodybags, SMARTY’s monthly rolling wallet friendly price plans or VOXI’s deals with unlimited social media.

Pay Monthly Phones

BT Mobile offers a range of premium phones from Apple, Samsung, Google, Huawei, Sony, Doro and Motorola. However, there’s a smaller range when compared with most of the other UK based networks. All phone deals are on a 24-month contract and each come with different plans to choose from. The exact monthly price will change depending on your handset and plan choice. Some of the handsets may require you to pay an upfront fee.

Network Coverage & Speeds

BT Mobile actually owns EE and uses EE as its network provider. This means BT Mobile customers receive identical network coverage on 2G, 3G and 4G. Considering EE’s 4G population coverage is over 99% and its landmass coverage has reached beyond 95%, BT customers should get excellent 4G coverage across the UK. As always, Half Cooked strongly recommends checking the coverage in your area before committing to a network and EE, or in this case BT is no exception.

As for 4G data speeds BT Mobile tracks slightly behind EE. The network’s customers can get a maximum download speed of 30Mbps, unless they purchase a BT Mobile Extra Speed 4G add-on. The add-on increases the maximum 4G download speed to 60Mbps. The Extra Speed add-on is a monthly rolling contract priced at £4/month.

According to Opensignal’s April 2021 speed test results EE’s average 4G download speeds are around 39Mbps, which means EE is the fastest mobile network in the UK once again. BT Mobile itself wasn’t tested, but since these two networks share the same infrastructure, their download speeds should be similar, if not identical.

5G Coverage

BT Mobile uses EE’s network to provide 5G to its customers, meaning BT’s 5G is available wherever EE’s is. BT Mobile’s 5G coverage is live in 160 cities and towns across the UK. EE aims to roll out to even more cities before the end of 2020, and BT will take advantage of this too.

Both EE and BT Mobile offer the same 5G download speeds, but BT Mobile’s 5G only works with devices directly purchased from them. It’s a bit of a shame given how the carrier only offers a handful of devices with 5G support at the moment.

Looking at Opensignal’s 2021 tests on 5G connection, EE has the fastest median download speeds in the United Kingdom at 140Mbps. EE also has the second highest number of 5G users among the mobile networks in the UK and 140Mbps still amazingly fast and way more than enough for all types of online activities. They also have the fastest 5G upload speeds, averaging around 16.4Mbps.

Half Cooked would like to remind you that 5G is typically only available in select areas of cities and towns. When a location is listed as having 5G, it doesn’t mean the network is available throughout the whole city/town. You might want to check out the other networks with 5G coverage in the UK first, before ordering your phone or SIM.

Voice Call Quality

In terms of voice call quality EE has come out on top versus it’s rivals consistently over the last few years. Sharing EE’s network, as well as offering both Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling, BT Mobile is also sitting at the top spot. EE/BT Mobile ranked as the best network in the most recent network tests performed by umlaut (an independent testing body).

The networks were selected as the best in this category, because of their top notch audio quality & fast call setup times.

Wi-Fi Calling & 4G Calling

With BT’s 4G Calling, when you make or receive a phone call, your phone will continue to stay on 4G. This means you can use 4G data at full speed even when you’re on a call. If you have 4G Calling your voice call quality will improve vs. 3G calling.

Wi-Fi Calling will allow you to call and text using a Wi-Fi network in the UK. This feature is especially great if you live in an area with poor coverage and can’t use your mobile device. Neither 4G Calling nor Wi-Fi Calling will eat up your data allowance. All calls and texts come out of your monthly minutes & texts allowance.

BT Mobile offers both Wi-Fi Calling & 4G Calling and if you’re using both at the same time, your calls will seamlessly transition between Wi-Fi and 4G depending on which signal is stronger. Both features are available to all BT Mobile customers, but you’ll need a compatible device with the latest software.

Note: 4G Calling and Wi-Fi Calling aren’t available abroad.

Wi-Fi Hotspots

All BT customers benefit from unlimited access to BT Mobile’s free Wi-Fi hotspots across the UK. BT provides over 5 million hotspots at hotels, cafes, city centres, train stations, shopping centres & more. With such wide coverage & no data cap, the carrier gives customers the opportunity to save on their mobile data in a lot of public locations.

You can find the closest BT Wi-Fi hotspot near you by using BT’s official website. You may discover more UK networks with free Wi-Fi hotspots by reading our guide.

Tethering means turning your mobile device into a personal hotspot so other compatible devices like laptops, smartphones and tablets can use it to connect to the internet.

There are no speed restrictions or fair usage limits on BT Mobile’ tethering so you can use your data allowance freely to tether to other devices. However, keep in mind that when you turn your phone into a personal hotspot, you’ll be using your monthly data allowance on your tariff. When you tether, data gets eaten up at a faster rate, so you might want to set a spending cap if you’re planning to do it regularly.

International Roaming

Due to roaming regulation changes that came into effect in 2017, mobile networks based in the UK must provide inclusive EU roaming. All BT Mobile phone deals and SIM plans include data roaming in 47 destinations worldwide. You may use your plan abroad without worrying about extra charges. You’ll also get free access to BT’s free Wi-Fi hotspots around the world.

Non-European countries such as Australia, Japan and the US aren’t included in BT Mobile’s ‘Roam Like Home’. If you’re travelling to a country outside the EU zone, make sure to check BT Mobile’s roaming charges.

BT Mobile also offers a special add-on called ‘Travel Data Pass’, which gets you a 500MB data allowance for £6 a day in eligible countries. You can use this addon in the USA, Canada, China, Mexico, New Zealand, Turkey, UAE, Thailand, Andorra, Australia, India and South Africa.

Since BT Mobile’s international roaming options are a bit limited, we’d like to recommend checking out Three Go Roam feature, which allows customers to roam freely in 71 destinations, at no extra cost. You can also check out Vodafone’s Unlimited Max plan, which offers free roaming in 81 destinations, including free roaming in Turkey.

We don’t recommend BT Mobile for making international calls from the UK, as their rates are a bit too high.

All BT Mobile customers benefit from BT Wi-Fi and get unlimited access to over 5 million BT hotspots at no extra cost. These hotspots are mainly based around shopping centres, train stations, coffee shops, restaurants and more.

BT Sport

When you choose a BT Mobile plan with at least 20GB of data, you get free access to the BT Sport mobile application. With BT Sport’s mobile app you can watch live games and sporting events including Premier League and FA Cup matches. However, using the app will eat up your monthly data allowance so it’s better to use it with Wi-Fi if you don’t have a lot of spare data.

BT Broadband & Halo Discounts

If you’re an existing BT Broadband customer you get an automatic £5/month discount on all BT Mobile price plans. The bill doesn’t have to be under your name, but you’ll have to provide proof that you’re living in a household with a BT Broadband connection. If you also have BT Halo, you’ll be getting double data on all BT Mobile plans.

If you’re also a BT Halo customer you get double data on all BT Mobile plans. This bonus works even if the plan you choose already comes with a data boost. We strongly recommend checking out BT Complete WiFi Review. This service guarantees WiFi in every room of your house or offers your money back.

BT Spending Caps

BT Mobile gives you full control over your plans and bills by providing a monthly spending cap feature. This way you won’t face any shocking bills at the end of a month. Once you sign up for this feature you can change your monthly spending cap via ‘My BT’.

If you don’t want to be able to exceed your allowances, other mobile networks like VOXISMARTY and giffgaff might be worth looking into.

BT Family

We think BT Mobile offers the best family discounts in the UK. BT Mobile’s family deals are straightforward and they are at great value. And if you’re an existing BT Broadband member it gets even better. BT Halo customers are granted double the data on all plans.

One downside to BT’s family plans is all family members must be on the same price plan. You can save upto 20%, but the more plans you add (maximum five SIMs per family plan) and the pricier ones you pick, the more you’ll be saving with BT Mobile.

If BT Mobile’s family deals aren’t what you’re looking for you might want to read Half Cooked’s guide on the best family mobile plans in the UK and find the one that suits your needs the best.

Change Your Plan Monthly

While BT Mobile doesn’t have any 30-day rolling plans, the network proposes flexibility by letting you change your tariff on a monthly basis. It’s that simple, you can change your data every month, no questions asked. You might also want to know that BT Mobile doesn’t offer a data rollover programme.
