In this guide, we’ll take an in-depth look at available NHS staff discounts & deals on the UK’s mobile network operators
EE’s best selling plan is a 5G ready 160GB data plan with unlimited texts & minutes for just £20. It’s a 24-month basic plan. It may not contain any extras, but you’ll be getting the most 4G and 5G coverage, as well as the fastest 4G data speeds in the UK!
This deal comes with 6 months of free Apple Music, and 3 months of BT Sport.
In the UK, when you’re an employee of the emergency services, you, or your family may be eligible for some great discounts or deals. The NHS offers can come in multiple ways, including major discounts on SIM only plans, extra data, minutes & texts and cheaper phone contracts.
Most major network operators offer solid NHS discounts & SIM deals, but when it comes to MVNOs (mobile virtual network operators) things change a bit. Their deals are usually at competitive prices to begin with and they don’t have the power to offer big discounts, unlike their parent networks.
First things first, you need to ensure you’re eligible for a discount with different providers asking for different evidence to confirm your employment with the NHS & in most cases you’re not allowed to combine NHS discounts & offers with other promotions.
In this guide, we’ll be covering which UK mobile networks offer discounts for NHS staff, what these discounts & deals include and we’ll help you find out if you’re eligible or not.
The UK’s new Emergency Services Network (ESN) is built on EE’s unrivalled 4G network. The carrier has the most 4G coverage, as well as the fastest 4G average data speeds in the country. As an employee of the emergency services, you & your family can get a 20% discount on selected EE pay monthly plans. You can also get the same discount on the network’s 4GEE tablets and EE Mobile Broadband deals.
The network offers up to five discounts per emergency service worker. These people can be your friends or family and they’re redeemable anywhere. If your organisation is named in this list you’re eligible for EE’s 20% NHS discount. You’ll also have to provide a valid work email or employee ID to EE. Once your registration details have been verified, EE will send a link to you, where you can create your discount codes.
EE’s NHS discounts do not include their 5G SIM plans. The following list shows which plans are eligible for the 20% discount:
If you want to learn more about the carrier, you can read our extensive EE Review and find out if they’re offering what you’re looking for. If you’re already a BT or Virgin customer, you might want to check out their SIM deals too. You get extra benefits for being an existing customer and both providers are powered by the EE Network.
If you’re a National Health Service and ambulance service employee, you automatically qualify for discounts up to 15% on selected Vodafone pay monthly plans. You can also take advantage of this discount if your employer is partnered with Vodafone.
To get your NHS discount from Vodafone you must complete this form and provide a valid company email address. Once Vodafone verifies your information, you’ll get 15% off a phone, a SIM only plan or a tablet, it’s that simple. When you join and get your discount, you can invite a friend or a family member to get the same discount too.
Keep in mind that once Vodafone applies your discount a £10 membership fee will be added to your bill. This will be a one-time payment though. Have a look at our Vodafone Review and find out if Vodafone is the right network for you.
You can get up to 25% off your airtime plan with O2 Open, when you buy a new device with O2’s Custom Plans service. The network is working with the NHS, so all you have to do is provide a valid email address or your ID when filling in the application form.
You can claim your NHS discount once you get your device, but you have to do it within the first 28 days. O2’s NHS discount only applies to your airtime plan, your device plan will cost the same. The discount only works with devices directly bought from O2, if you purchase your handset or tablet from a third party you won’t be eligible for this deal.
You can easily find out if you are eligible for the NHS discount. Just text OPEN, write your organisation’s name, and send it to 61202. This discount isn’t limited to NHS staff, your company may be partnered with O2. If that’s the case you can benefit from the same perk.
There are currently two different discounts available on O2 Open:

BT Mobile is using EE’s network to offer 4G and 5G SIM & phone plans. The network doesn’t offer any discounts, but NHS members can get unlimited data on their BT Mobile plans, which is normally only available to BT Halo customers.
However, this is a limited time offer and unless BT decides to extend this deal, it will end on the 17th December 2020. If you already applied for it with a valid NHS email address, you will have unlimited data on your BT Mobile plan until Sunday 31 January 2021.
BT Mobile usually stands out with their superfast 4G coverage, and over five million free Wi-Fi hotspots exclusive to their customers across the UK. Have a look at our BT Mobile Review to discover more about their deals and extras.
While there are only a few networks offering special discounts to NHS staff, Three and some other MVNOs offer either unbeatable prices or amazing perks at no extra cost. Since MVNOs usually offer no credit check, commitment-free SIM only plans you also enjoy flexibility and freedom.
Unfortunately, Three doesn’t have any specific NHS discounts, but their prices are usually very competitive and they offer the fastest 5G in the UK and it comes at no extra cost. You also get Three’s Go Roam scheme, which allows you to use your UK allowances in 71 destinations across the world. Voice call quality improving features like 4G Calling and Wi-Fi Calling also come for free, available to all Three customers, even if they’re using the network’s traditional pay as you go service.
You can learn all you need to know about the carrier by reading our extensive Three Review.
Powered by Three, SMARTY offers two different types of SIM only plans. If you grab a data discount SIM plan from SMARTY you will get your money back for the data you didn’t use that month.
The network’s ‘All the data you need for less’ plans offer larger data allowances, but they come at unbeatable prices. SMARTY’s unlimited data plan is generally the cheapest on the market.
SMARTY doesn’t offer any NHS discounts, but their prices are cheaper than the likes of EE, Vodafone and O2, even including their 25% NHS discounts. SMARTY also offers a family mobile plan option, which gets you a 10% discount for every new plan added under one main account.
SMARTY has Wi-Fi Calling at no extra cost, but 4G Calling is yet to arrive. The carrier has 4G and 3G, but SMARTY 5G is also in the works.
VOXI is owned and operated by Vodafone and the MVNO has multiple great features, which make their offers unique. All VOXI plans come with Endless Social Media, and more expensive VOXI SIM only plans include the network’s Endless Video feature, which allows unlimited streaming on YouTube, Netflix and some other popular platforms.
The network offers 5G coverage at reasonable prices and you can get VOXI’s 5G when roaming abroad in Germany, Spain, Italy and Ireland. All VOXI SIM’s are on 30 day deals and they work on a prepaid basis, so you don’t have to go through a credit check so they’re contract free.
Make sure to have a look at our in-depth VOXI Review and see if their offers are suitable for you. You can also check out how VOXI compares to Vodafone by reading our detailed comparison.
giffgaff doesn’t offer any special discount to NHS staff, but their extremely flexible Goodybags must be mentioned here. Unlike most other networks, giffgaff offers renewable contract-free SIM plans (dubbed as Goodybags). This means you don’t have to wait for 30 days to add a new Goodybag to your SIM. If you run out of data, you can just buy a new one rather than opting for a pricey add-on.
giffgaff’s unlimited data plans come in two variations. Always On has a fair usage cap at 80GB. You get unlimited downloads with 4G speeds till you reach this cap, but after that your download speed will be restricted to 384kbps between 8 a.m. and midnight. The network’s unrestricted unlimited data deal is known as Golden Goodybag Unlimited Data, but it’s quite pricey.
Make sure to read our giffgaff Review to get more information about the network, their price plans and other benefits.
We believe EE offers the best NHS discounts in the UK. Their prices may still be high, even after the discount, but their deals offer great value and unbeatable 4G coverage and data speeds. Plus you can share your discount with up to four people.
O2’s offers are only available if you’re purchasing a phone and a custom plan from them and Vodafone asks for a one-time only membership fee.
You’ll need a valid NHS email address or an ID, in order to benefit from a mobile network’s NHS discount. However, your company may also be partnered with one of the UK’s mobile networks, which will give you access to similar discounts, if not identical.
EE allows you to share your NHS discount with four other people. All you have to do is generate a discount code and your friend or family member will redeem it at the checkout. Vodafone lets you bring only one other person.
The NHS discount will remain until the end of your contract or if you decide to terminate your contract.
Your NHS contract will remain until the end of your contract with the network. However, you won’t be able to get a new discount.
No, at the moment no network allows you to combine an NHS discount with another.
